Synopsis (from Goodreads): The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.

But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming…

This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth.

MyThoughts

This book was absolutely beautiful. I knew going into it that it would be heartbreaking, but I wasn’t fully prepared for just how sad it actually is. This is definitely a new all time favorite book of mine. I borrowed it from my friend to read but I know I’m going to be picking up my own copy.

I want to start by talking about the illustrations. They are creepy and amazing and I loved them. They really captured the tone of the book and I was just in awe over the beauty of them.

The writing style of this book is absolutely wonderful. It was captivating and poetic, and I read the entire book in two sittings (I probably could’ve done it in one if I didn’t start it at 11 P.M. when I was about to go to sleep). Patrick Ness does an amazing job at capturing your attention and keeping you reading because just have to know what happens next.

I absolutely would recommend this book to anyone. I think everyone can get something out of this book. It’s such a wonderfully-written story and the illustrations are as beautiful as the words.

5 star

Well, that’s my review for A Monster Calls! Sorry it’s so short, but it’s just hard to capture just how amazing this book is into words. I’m definitely going to be reading something else by Patrick Ness! 1. I’ve been hearing a lot about this book recently, and it sounds great! Have you read Patrick Ness’s Chaos Walking trilogy? I really enjoyed it, and I think if you liked this one you’ll like it as well. Anyway, great review, I’m going to have to read this soon! 🙂

  2. YES! This book was absolutely beautiful and incredibly sad. I literally pulled me heart right out of my chest. I’m very sad that I have not read the version with the illustrations but when I grab my own copy, I will get the one with illustrations!
